In 1954, she moved to Chicago and signed with Chess Records, where she recorded her first hit, "The Wallflower." Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, she continued to release popular songs like "At Last," "Tell Mama," and "I'd Rather Go Blind."
James was a versatile artist who performed in various genres, including blues, R&B, jazz, rock and roll, and soul. She won six Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993. Her powerful voice and emotional depth made her one of the most influential singers of her time.
On January 25, 2012, James passed away at the age of 73 due to complications from leukemia. She left behind a lasting legacy and is still remembered as one of the greatest singers in American music history.
